I could not help but think, this morning, about how so many of the "business opportunities" out there so closely resemble a bottle rocket. They take off like a rocket (of course), and shoot really high very quickly. Sadly, many have the same result as a bottle rocket. They are really exciting for a brief moment in time, and make a huge flash, but burn out just as quickly as they launched.
If you have spent any time at all around the IM and MLM industries you have surely seen many of these come and go. If not, go surf some traffic exchanges. You will see the same program over and over for a few weeks, but a month or two later, you never hear of it again. Of course, it was hyped as the "Next Best Thing".
These programs offer the moon, but are unsustainable. Even many of the ones that do last more than a few months struggle once the initial hype has blown over. Most of the people who are duped into these programs get in within the first few weeks, and anyone who comes along promoting it thereafter has a hard time recruiting anyone because it is already saturated.
Here are a few things to look out for when viewing potential opportunities (and I use that word very loosely here).
- If they make any claim about making a certain amount of money in a given duration of time, don't fall for it.
- "Prelaunch": I've spoken about this one before. I would never consider any opportunity under 2 years old.
- "Spillover": A buzz word that will kill a business. This word promotes a welfare mentality. Sure, it sound good, but people get in expecting something for nothing, and nothing is exactly what they do. When everyone else below them (if they get anyone below them) does nothing as well, they quit.
- Wacky comp plan: There are all sorts of crazy comp plans out there. Learn more about spotting them on my MLM Compensation Plans page.
Again, Happy 4th of July!
See you all tomorrow.
